Informal Traders – EPWP Organics Trial, Bellville CBD

Project Design & Implementation

This trial aimed to gain valuable data on organic waste
produced by informal traders in the Bellville CBD. Building on
Urban Waste Managements (UWM) successful trial in
2022/2023, this phase involved Waste-ED in the design &
implementation of the programme for local NGO, GTP and the
Events & Partnership Unit in UWM to engage in unifying area
specific data.

Mayoral Clean up and place making campaign

Waste-ED’s Executive Director, Candice
Mostert was contracted by the the Greater Tygerberg
Partnership to design and lead the waste portfolio of the
City of Cape Town mayoral funded clean up and
placemaking campaign in Bellville, the largest CBD in
Cape Town.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market, Waterfront

Conducted a comprehensive waste audit across all standalone traders at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market. The project focused on mapping waste streams, identifying inefficiencies, and providing tailored recommendations to improve waste separation and diversion. Collaboration with traders supported practical, context-specific solutions for reducing environmental impact.

Waste-ED Developed the Zero Waste School Programme for GTP’s key role out strategies ( 2017 ) as part of a Bellville Zero Waste Concept.

Two Oceans Aquarium

Led a waste audit of both front-of-house and back-of-house operations at the Two Oceans Aquarium. The project focused on understanding waste generation across public and staff areas, mapping key waste streams, and identifying improvement opportunities.

Delivered a range of sustainability and resilience-focused initiatives, including the Trash to Treasure Festival, school-based eco crew programmes, buy-back centres, community garden projects, zero waste business strategies, and alternative models for RDP housing. Subcontracted to support environmental education through event consulting, partnerships, and suistainable building programmes. Contributed to initiatives such as Baz-Art and continue to co-designed and implemented natural building and eco-alternative structures using ecobricks, including builds at Delft ECDC and Helderberg Nature Reserve Information Centre.
